The report contains the final results of the collective work carried on by a group of researchers operating within the Cost Action Land management for urban dynamics (Transport and Urban development Domain, n° 602), looking for new perspectives to a more effective control of urban expansion and regeneration by means of innovative methods and tools. The fast change going on, namely socio-economic phenomena at the wider scale, the European integration and the affirmation of neo-liberal politico-administrative orientations, has produced extensive territorial restructuring, deep transformations in the urban form, and the change of the development models.
The possibility to gather together an extensive number of researchers, practitioners and experts from different European Countries, has been the driver for Cost Action TU0602. COST- the acronym for European Cooperation in Science and Technology- is the oldest and widest European intergovernmental network for cooperation in research. Established by the Ministerial Conference in November 1971, COST is presently used by the scientific communities of 36 European countries to cooperate in common research projects supported by national funds.

Maurizio Tira is Full Professor of Town and regional planning at the University of Brescia. His expertise is in the areas of mobility and planning, accessibility and safety in urban environment, planning in hazardous areas, land use transformations and urban dynamics. He has been responsible of several research projects, vice-chairman of the EU Action COST - Urban civil engineering C19 “Proactive Crisis Management of Urban Infrastructure” and Chairman of COST Action TU0602 “Land management for urban dynamics”. Invited expert of the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) and the OECD International Transport Forum. Author of various books and papers in academic journals both at national and international level.

Erwin van der Krabben is Professor of Planning and Property Development in Radboud University Nijmegen and (part time) Professor of Real Estate in the University of Ulster (Belfast, Northern Ireland). His expertise is in the areas of land and property development research, value capturing instruments and land development models, and integrated infrastructure and location development projects. He has published extensively in academic international journals on the above issues and has participated in a number of national and international research projects.

Bruno Zanon graduated in Architecture, is Associate Professor of Urban and Spatial Planning at the University of Trento, Italy. His research interests regard spatial organisation dynamics, urban planning methods and tools, urban sustainability. He has taken part in planning experiences at regional and urban levels, in spatial analysis research works, in environmental planning processes and assessment procedures. He has published books and articles on Italian and international journals. He is member of national and international planning associations and has been the Italian representative in the COST C8 Action “Sustainable Urban Infrastructure” and chairman of a working group of the Cost Action TU0602 “Land Management for Urban Dynamics”.
